Tim Ryan recently showed up on Bill Maher and responded to the issue of whether the Super Bowl Nike Ad was recycling old grievances. Tim Ryan pivoted to a bigger issue: Are we so worried about how women are doing that we are missing the real issues around boys and toxic masculinity?
Guys, we need to look at ourselves and admit we've let this slide WAY too much. The facts don't lie: Suicide amongst men was 4 times higher in men in 2021 then it was for women. A recent paper states that men are 8.3% more likely to suffer from an Internet Addiction. Female colleagues I know have openly talked about men on their phones near them looking at “flicks” on adult oriented sites with little concern that another woman might be nearby on the bus. A recent survey done by Forbes magazine said that 90% of women on LinkedIn had received messages that were harassing from male users of the site.
As a man who desires to be empathic, protective, and conscientious, I'm keenly aware that there's an entire movement that is hyped up on classical Stoic philosophy. Stoic philosophy and old school 1940’s style sexism seem to go together a little bit TOO well,so it seems. So guys, let's cut the Stoic Bro posting, please.. it's not cool, it's kinda tired. My LinkedIn doesn't really need any more of this.
Here in New Haven, A group self-identifying as NeoNazi showed up clad in all black to chant slogans and yell at patrons outside of Neverending Books. Luckily the bookstore owners had a huge community response to confront the group and police showed up before things got ugly. From the info coming out of the incident, all were white males who appeared to be young. This is chilling-Why are young men and teens being drawn into hate groups so easily? Why is it that youth are easily drawn into fringe movements and recruited for nonsense such as this? The only simple conclusion I have is that Toxic Masculinity has replaced real male maturity in many cases, and the role models we once had in place to show healthy masculinity are not as present. We don't need Tim Ryan just to show us the way forward, we need normal men who emote, are rational, and who respect and care for others around them to lead the way.
